Helleborus foetidus

Bear’s Foot Hellebore

I love all the new hellebores out on the market with all their fine colors, but sometimes the low-key loveliness of a straight species is so satisfying. The foliage on this hellebore holds up better in the winter. When winter throws in a little too much ice and wind, and I have to cut back some of the hybrid hellebores, this one is still looking good. It gives the garden some winter green, and when it blooms, it still has some foliage with it.

Plants are shorter lived, but self-seed nicely to form a colony. Deer resistant.

Full shade. Good drainage. Height 1-2′. Spread 1′. Zones 6-7.

3.5″ pot
