Southern Shield Fern
Stately, semi-evergreen, clumping native fern that has 3′, shiny, upright, dark green fronds. Southern Shield Fern gives structure and low-key beauty to the shade garden while being impervious to heat, humidity, and boggy soils. Foliage turns a golden-yellow in fall.
Comfortable in the woodland garden as well as along shady streams and ponds where it will spread by rhizomes. Dense shade is also not problem for this southeastern US native.
Full-part shade. Height 2-4′. Spread 2-3′. Deer resistant. Zones 6-9.
