Silphium asteriscus

Starry Rosinweed/Cup Plant

Cheerful lemon-yellow, 2.5″ flowers bloom on erect, multi-branched stems throughout the summer. Leaves and stems are covered by fine hairs which make this plant unattractive to deer. However, the flowers are very attractive to butterflies and bees, while songbirds love the seeds.

Rosinweed is known for its numerous medicinal uses. The word “rosinweed” refers to the resinous substance in the stems. The stems were used by Native Americans to clean their teeth.
