Also referred to as Garden Heliotrope because of the sweetly scented flowers, Valerian has been used for centuries as a calming herb. Not only is Valerian a useful herb, it is a pretty garden plant. White, airy flowers bloom in the summer. It is a fine, tall plant for the back of the border and woodland gardens.

Grow in sun or shade. Average to moist soils. Height 5′ in bloom. Spread 3-4′. Zones 5-9.
