Wand Goldenrod
If there was an award for the most asked about plant at the nursery in 2024 Wand Goldenrod would have won it. The texture, form and movement of this plant had everyone making a beeline for it. I first saw it at Mt Cuba in the solidago trials. I was drawn to the clean, glossy green foliage. Solidagos are susceptible to rust and this one was clean as a whistle and very upright and linear. The photo shown here was taken in July. The flowers did not start to bloom until late fall. By that time the flowering stems were at least 8’long and falling over in the nutrient rich, well watered nursery. Still, even in flop mode it made a positive impression and I imagined that swirly energy in a perennial bed or open meadow. To experiment, we trimmed a few of the plants in the June prune fashion…in August…a bit late to see for sure exactly how they would perform and they branched out with no flopping. So, take your pick in style. Regardless it will garner plenty of attention.
An ideal plant for wet areas, rain gardens, bogs, and along streams. Long slender green leaves and stems give way to yellow, daisy-like flowers from late summer to fall attracting all sorts of pollinators.
Wand Goldenrod is native to sandy pine barrens and wet coastal areas from New Jersey to Texas.
