Dyer’s Saw-wort

Striking reddish-purple, thistle-like flowers provide a beautiful color contrast to the usual yellows of the dye garden. And the royal purple flower buds–they remind you of Faberge eggs in their shape and fine detail. Flowers bloom from mid-summer to early fall followed by fuzzy seedheads.

Leaves produce a warm yellow dye rich in color fast luteolins. May take 2-3 years for first harvest. Native to the British Isles and Europe where it is considered endangered. We received our seed from Germany. The leaves are wide and strap-like leading us to believe it is the subspecies, monticola. It has not been confirmed but we have reason to believe that the more leaf there is, there more luteolins!

Full-part sun. Height 7-36″. Spread 12″. Happiest growing in nutrient poor soils and grasslands. Adaptable to moist or dry areas. Zones 6 (at least) – 9

4″ tall pot
