Arborvitae Fern

Dark green, lacy, semi-evergreen leaves that resemble arborvitae or cedar. It gracefully forms a  groundcover in moist, well-drained soils throughout the shade garden–even under tree canopies. Cool autumn days bring about beautiful sunset tones in the foliage.

Looks great forming a “skirt” around taller plants or in containers. Not an actual fern, rather it’s a prehistoric relative or a “living fossil.” Textural garden accent when planted near bolder shade plants like hostas, solomon’s seal, and heucheras. Amazingly complimentary to moss gardens.

Full-part shade. Height 6-18″. Spread 12-24″. Deer resistant. Zones 6-9.
