Salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips’
Hot Lips Salvia
A cheery salvia that produces white flowers with a bright red lower lip. Flowers bloom spring through fall attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. As evening temperatures begin to rise, flowers may turn all red or all white resulting in a plant with some red flowers and some white flowers. As the nights get cooler again, flowers return to their original bicolor state.
Full sun and good drainage. Drought tolerant. Height 2-3′. Spread 2-3′. Zones (6)7-9. In colder zones, plants can come back very late. Don’t pull them out too early thinking they did not make it through the winter! Wait for at least 3 weeks of 70-degree weather before pronouncing them expired.
