Baptisia tinctoria

Wild Dyer’s Indigo

Our very own source of blue dye! This native was used in colonial times to make a blue dye. The dye from Baptisia tinctoria does not yield the same deep color as the more commonly used sources but it does offer us a window into our history and a beautiful native garden plant. Not as big as other baptisias it has a rounded, shrub-like habit, with smaller leaves and yellow pea-like flowers June-September. As with other members of its family it attracts hummingbirds and butterflies and helps restore poor soils.

Full sun. Height and Spread 2-3′. Tolerates drought and poor soil. Deer resistant. Native to northeastern US. Zones 3-9.

4″ tall pot
