Downy Lobelia

A lesser well known lobelia that should be better well known! Downy Lobelia is a native plant that makes an excellent garden perennial standing out from the lobelia crowd with its more open, airy flower stalks and its lavender-blue flowers that cluster to one side of the stalk.

Native to eastern US it is endangered in PA. Let’s plant more! Equally at home in the woodland garden and sunny perennial beds as it is in roadside ditches. Think of all the possibilities..

These late summer flowers have a single white mark (2 marks for Big Blue Lobelia) that also make them distinctive. Like all lobelias, bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds find it irresistible.

Perfect for wildflower borders and other informal plantings. Considered the most common blue lobelia native to the southeastern US. Self-seeds.
