This medicinal herb and dye plant from Eurasia has bright orangey-yellow, sunflower-like flowers mid-summer to fall and huge elongated leaves up to 2’ long. Elecampane looks excellent at the back of the border with its bright, showy flowers towering above, attracting butterflies. The seeds are good forage for birds.
The roots were used by the Celtics to produce a blue dye. The best roots are harvested the second year in the fall.
Full sun. Height 5-8’. Spread 3-4’. Zones 3-9.
