Dalea purpurea

Purple Prairie Clover

This drought tolerant tough little native of our US prairies adds a definite fun factor to the garden! The rosy-purple thimble shaped flower heads bloom over sprays of lacy foliage in mid-summer. The flowers start at the bottom of the flower head and work their way up the flower stalk. A really fascinating feature for those of us who are infatuated by that sort of thing. They look great dotted in amongst other flowering perennials, grasses, or allowed to seed along gravel driveways, meadows, and fence lines. The flowers are a nectar source for pollinators, and the foliage hosts small butterfly and moth species.

Thick, deep taproots makes Dalea drought and heat tolerant. Dalea is a nitrogen-fixing plant–an important addition to borders, native gardens, and naturalized areas, as well as prairie restoration – another fascinating feature!

We are offering Dalea in a smaller size this year to make them easy to tuck in here and there in the garden.
