Short’s Woodland Aster

Picture a purple mist of flower blooms in your fall garden topped by busy clusters of last-minute pollinators–that’s Short’s Woodland Aster. This showy native aster has foot-long clusters of blue-violet flowers with yellow discs that mellow to red after pollination. Smooth leaf margins and a clump-forming habit distinguish this aster from the rest.

June-prune by half to allow the showy flowerheads to stay upright and gorgeous in fall. Self-sows for naturalizing and for seed-eaters. Stunning when paired with solidagos.

Part sun. Height 1-3′. Spread 1-3′. Native to eastern US. Zones 3-8.
