Yunnan Licorice

Looking to embellish your winter garden? Love the natural look and adding plants with an herbal history and depth? This plant is for you.

Summertime brings upright cinnamon-colored stems with loosely arranged leaves and small lavender pea flower blooms. In fall a wondrous thing happens when the blooms change to showy, bristly seedheads. The colors go from green to purple to a henna hue bringing seasonal winter interest to the garden. Fresh or dried flower arrangements go next level with these lovelies.

I have not tasted it for myself, but it is reported that this member of the licorice family has a root that can be used for teas and sweets, as well as having medicinal properties.

An easy-care plant that just needs well-drained soil. A member of the pea family, it has the natural ability to improve the soil. Native to China’s Yunnan province.

Full-part sun. Height 4-5′. Spread 20″-2.5′. Drought tolerant. Hardy to Zone 6.

4.5″ pot
