May Pop

Showy 4″ fragrant lavender flowers bloom July to frost. Hen-egg-sized fruits are produced after flowering and are sometimes used to make jams and jellies. The fruits turn from green to light orange when ripe, and can be eaten off the vine. They make a tasty yet seedy treat. One of the hardiest species of passion vines, it is native to the southeastern US. The Cherokee Indians call it Ocoee.

Full sun. Height 15-20′. Spreads by root so place carefully. Can be late breaking dormancy (as late as July). Supports many species of butterflies. Bumblebees are often found snoozing in the blossoms. Zones 7-11.
