Spreading, deciduous plant that creates a dense carpet of glossy green foliage in shady areas and on steep slopes where it minimizes erosion. Delicate plum-colored, star-shaped flowers appear mid-spring to early summer. Foliage turns from yellow to intense purple in fall. Bark and roots render a yellow dye. Native to northeastern US.
Prefers shade, but will grow in sun. Height 1-3′. Zones 4-9.
