Roots of this hardy perennial herb have been used for centuries to produce a red dye. Harvest roots and rhizomes of 3-year-old plants in the spring and autumn. Grow plants in full sun and average soils. Loose soils will increase root growth and make for easy harvest. Two plants will dye 4 oz of wool.
