New England Blazing Star
The only blazing star native to New England.
Tight colorful buds open to fuzzy flowers in shades of purple to white on tall spikes. Blooming occurs late summer to early fall attracting butterflies (especially Monarchs), bees, and hummingbirds. Variety novae angliae has deep green leaves with less pubescense making for a tidier and shinier appearance.
A rare and protected plant in New England, it thrives in dry, sandy, disturbed soils and has good drought tolerance.
