Eupatorium fistulosum (Eutrochium fistulosum)
Joe Pye Weed
This beautiful native bears huge umbels of rosey-mauve flowers August-September attracting hordes of butterflies, especially swallowtails. An important pollinator plant. Songbirds love the seed, and the fluffy down from the seed is used for nesting material. Makes an excellent cut flower. Well-suited for the back of the border mixed with other late summer bloomers, but also has a tall majestic stature when planted on its own.
Full sun. Average to moist soils. Leave stalks through winter for greater hardiness. Height 5-7’. Spread 2-4′. Zones 4-8.
