Lady’s Bedstraw is a perennial herb often used for dying fabrics red or yellow. Flowering shoots in full bloom produce a yellow dye. Fresh roots dug in the fall will yield beautiful shades of red dye. If you wish to grow Lady’s Bedstraw for the red dye, plant in raised beds for easier root harvest. Plant in average to poor soils. The roots of 4 plants can dye 4 ounces of wool. Also used as a strewing herb in medieval times.
